What Palm Tree Trimming & Removal Involves — and When Your Palms Need It

Palms aren't trimmed like regular trees, and they shouldn't be. Most of the work is cleaning up the crown — skinning off the old, dead fronds and the loose boots along the trunk, cutting away brown and broken fronds, and clearing the heavy seed pods and dates before they drop and make a mess. Done right, your palm looks clean, grows healthy, and drops a lot less debris on your roof, deck, and driveway.

Down here in the Rio Grande Valley, palms take a beating from coastal wind and storms — especially out by South Padre Island and Brownsville. Loose fronds and seed pods turn into flying debris when a storm blows through, so a good trim before hurricane season is one of the smartest things you can do. And when a palm is dead, diseased, leaning, or just too close to a roof or power line, we handle the full removal too.

One thing we don't do is over-cut. Stripping a palm down to a few fronds — the "hurricane cut" you see around town — actually weakens it and slows its growth. We leave a palm with what it needs to stay healthy, give you an honest, upfront price first, and the estimate is always free.

What's Included with Every Palm Tree Job

No over-cutting, no shortcuts, and nothing left in the yard. Every palm trimming and removal job covers the same careful process — whether you're in Harlingen, South Padre Island, Brownsville, or anywhere in the Rio Grande Valley.

Dead Frond Skinning & Removal

We skin off the old, dead fronds and trunk boots and cut away the brown, broken ones — leaving a clean crown and a tidy trunk.

Seed Pod & Date Cleanup

We cut down the heavy seed pods and dates before they drop, so you get less mess, fewer pests, and no slippery fruit underfoot.

Storm-Ready Shaping

We shape the crown and clear loose fronds before hurricane season, so coastal wind has less to tear off and throw around.

No Over-Cutting

We never strip a palm down to a few fronds. That "hurricane cut" weakens the palm — we leave it healthy and looking right.

Full Palm Removal & Cleanup

When a palm is dead, leaning, or in the way, we take the whole thing out and haul off every frond and section — yard left clean.

Honest, Upfront Pricing

A clear price before any cutting starts — what we quote is what you pay. No hidden fees, and the estimate is always free.

Questions About Palm Tree Service

How often should palm trees be trimmed?
For most palms in the Rio Grande Valley, once a year is plenty — usually before hurricane season, to clear dead fronds and seed pods. Some palms that drop a lot of fruit or sit right over a roof or pool may want a touch-up twice a year. Call us and we'll tell you what your palms need.
What is palm skinning?
Skinning is removing the old, dead frond bases — the "boots" — that stay stuck to the trunk after the fronds fall off. Taking them off gives the palm a clean, smooth trunk, gets rid of hiding spots for rats and bugs, and just looks a lot sharper. It's one of the most common things people ask us for.
Can you over-trim a palm?
Yes, and a lot of people do. Cutting a palm back to just a few fronds pointing straight up — the "hurricane cut" — strips away the green growth the palm lives on. It slows growth, stresses the palm, and can leave it weaker in a real storm, not stronger. We take the dead and brown fronds and leave the healthy green ones, which is what keeps a palm strong.
Should I trim my palms before hurricane season?
It's a smart move, especially near the coast in South Padre Island and Brownsville. Loose, dead fronds and heavy seed pods are exactly what storm wind rips off and throws into windows, cars, and roofs. Clearing them off ahead of time means less flying debris when a storm hits. If one does take a palm down, we also offer 24/7 storm damage and emergency service.
Do you remove whole palms and the stump?
We do. When a palm is dead, leaning, or just in the wrong spot, we take the whole thing down and haul it off. If you want the stump gone too, we can grind it out so you can reclaim the space — ask about tree stump removal and grinding when you book and we'll handle both in one visit.
Do you clean up the fronds and seed pods?
Always. Cleanup is part of every palm job — we haul off the fronds, seed pods, and any trunk sections. Your yard is clean when we leave, with no pile left behind for you to deal with.
